Friday August 6 through Tuesday August 10, 2004

Organization

The workshop will have three sessions each day (9-12, 1-4, and 5:30-8:30) with the evening session on the last day replaced by a party. Sessions will begin with about one hour of lecture and then there will be about 90 minutes for problem solving and discussion and 30 minutes for student reports. The lectures will be organized into three series on the core topics of linear algebra, calculus, and complex analysis, with content based on a document called What every incoming student is expected to know. There will be problem sets corresponding to each lecture series and significant projects in which groups of students will learn some new mathematics and present it in a 1-hour lecture at the end of the workshop. There will also be a couple of sessions on practical matters like students' trajectory through the program and various opportunities.

The lecturers and topics are:

Philip Foth:
Complex Analysis
Doug Ulmer:
Linear Algebra
Joe Watkins:
Calculus

Several senior grad student will be on hand to assist. They are Arlo Caine, Selin Kalaycioglu, Fred Leitner, Cameron McLeman, Rob Pawloski, and Patrick Shipman.
