Math Requirements: Each major at the UA has a specific math requirement set by the major. Some transfer students will complete their requirement prior to attending the UA, while others may need additional courses. Many UA courses have specific math related eligibility requirement that are enforced in the registration system. Entry into our courses is through recent Math transfer credit, UA prerequisites, or ALEKS PPL Assessment scores.
Most Arizona Online Campus students will take PHIL 110, Math 107, 112, 116, 125, or SBS 200 to satisfy the foundation math requirement for their major. Some other courses may be available. Many students start in Math 100 before taking the above classes. There is no placement test requirement for PHIL 110; however, this class only applies to certain majors. Please verify your requirement through your academic advisor.
UA incoming students need to determine:
- If your transfer math course(s) satisfy a UA Math requirement or prerequisite. Do you have a transfer Math course(s) or credit?
-
If you have completed a Math Department approved prerequisite at a level below Calculus I within the last 3 semesters (18 months) and want to register into the next UA Math course, contact the Math Placement Office to update your placement.
-
Students who want to take Math 129 or a higher level math course do not need to test, but need prerequisite credit in the UA system prior to the beginning of the semester.
- Do you have AP, CLEP, IB, or other credit by exam?
-
Do you need to take the PPL Assessment? Access is through the Next Steps Center.
-
Note that this test is for entry into courses at or below the level of Calculus I for students who do not have recent or appropriate transfer credit. If you are done with your Math requirements or plan on taking courses above the level of Calculus I (Math 129, 223, 254, etc.), then the test is not required.
-
You will need to test if you plan on taking a UA Math course above the level of Math 100 and have never taken a college level math course, or have not taken one in the last 3 semesters.
- Note that if you have not taken a college level math course, or have not in several years, you can enroll in Math 100 for review. The PPL Assessment is not required for entry into Math 100.
-
About the PPL Assessment
The Math Department uses the ALEKS PPL Placement Assessment (PPL Assessment), which is proctored through an online proctoring service called Respondus Monitor. Students need high speed internet, a webcam, and a microphone. Access to the Math Placement Assessment is through your Next Steps Center. Disable pop-up blockers before proceeding to Respondus Monitor.
- If you are admitted as a transfer, readmit, or NDS student, you do not need to test if you have a recent and approved UA Math 125 (Calculus), Math 120R (Calculus Preparation), or Math 112 (College Algebra) course.
- Read about the PPL Assessment here. Scores expire after one year.
- You can review for the PPL Assessment.
- Respondus Monitor Proctoring Quick Guide - You will need this guide to navigate the testing process.
- Respondus Monitor does not work with a Chromebook. If you only have access to a Chromebook, contact the Math Placement Office for assistance with accessing the PPL Assessment.
- Scores are processed into the UA system several times a day. Check Next Steps 12-24 hours after testing. Note that your placement message in your Next Steps Center is based on the requirements for your current major and may not include all courses.
- What score do I need to take a particular Math course? Note that you do not have to take the highest course you place into. You can take a lower course.
- Student who need access to screen reading technology for testing should contact the Math Placement Office to access the test. This is not available through the Next Steps Center.
